Karin Sheldon
Jewellery and Silversmithing has been Karin’s career for 35 years.
Karin uses exotic techniques to manipulate colour and surface texture. One is ‘Mokume-Gane’ – which translates from the Japanese as Wood Grain. This involves a technique taken from the making of Samurai swords, layering coloured metals to form a new, patterned sheet of metal with which to work. In 2011, her brooch ‘Shuttlingsloe to Wales’, won the 3D category in the Jobling Gowler Art Prize.
‘Keum-Bo’ is a Korean method of heat fusing a sheet of 24ct Gold to Sterling silver. The result looks sumptuously expensive.
The process of ‘Reticulation’ culminates in over-heating the surface of Sterling Silver – it crumples to suggest the surface of the Moon and the views of Nebulae. This surface is further embellished with ‘Keum-Bo’ Gold and a scattering of Diamonds to form the look of ‘Constellation’ – a range of delicate pieces suggesting a flight through the Universe.
Karin welcomes commissions of all kinds.
